A summer of cultural activities in the ‘Emerging City of Culture’, Lausanne

- The Swiss city of Lausanne received the prize last week for being the best ‘Emerging Cultural Destination’ at the Leading Culture Destinations (LCD) Berlin Awards 2021/2022. Named the ‘Oscars of Culture’ by the New York Times, the LCD Awards aim to reward creativity and innovation in the field. The win recognises the city’s commitment to offer a diverse and ambitious cultural scene.Lausanne has been seen as a European metropolis of art and innovative culture for many years and it is a title that will be reinforced in a few months, by the official opening of the new arts district: Platforme 10 on the 18th June. The arts district, Switzerland’s finest arts and culture complex, will bring together three of the Lausanne’s most popular museums under one roof – the Cantonal Museum of Fine Arts (MCBA), Photo Elysée and the MUDAC (Museum of Contemporary Design and Applied Arts). Visual arts, photography, design and contemporary applied arts will work in harmony together.The pretty lakeside city of Lausanne has long been a bastion of the arts. It was one of the first cities to welcome ‘outsider art’ when many discredited the concept and is home to the dedicated Collection de l’Art Brut, whilst classical art lovers are sure to enjoy the Fondation de l’Hermitage. Outside of the Plateforme 10 opening, visitors to the city can enjoy these other cultural exhibitions:
- Trésors de la Fondation des Treilles (runs to the 29th May 2022) – For the first time in Switzerland, the Fondation de l’Hermitage is showing a selection of the greatest masterpieces of the Fondation des Treilles, including works by Arp, Braque, Brauner, Dubuffet, Ernst, Alberto Giacometti, Klee, Lalanne, Léger, Picasso, and Takis. The exhibition also offers a unique opportunity to view the collection of Anne Gruner Schlumberger (1905-1993).
- La Belle Époque de l’Art Nouveau (runs to the 19th June 2022) – The works hanging in the Musée d’art de Pully come from a private collection. Most have never before been seen in Switzerland. They bear witness to a vibrant period which made its mark at the beginning of the last century.
- Riding the Olympic Wave (runs till the 5th March 2023) – This free exhibition at The Olympic
Museum presents a vast cultural program that celebrates the introduction of urban sports –
3×3 basketball, BMX freestyle, breaking, sport climbing, skateboarding, and surfing – at the
Olympic Games. The main exhibition explores how these sports became part of the Games,
while a series of art installations celebrates the sports’ diverse cultural expressions and
lifestyles.
