In the past, lunch in Lausanne meant either a sandwich on the go or a sit-down meal in a traditional restaurant. But lately the city has embraced the trend for bowls. Head to one of these brilliant places to perk up your lunch with a healthy, creative bowl composed of fresh salad, vegetables, meat or fish, pulses, grains or rice.
1. Arctic Juice & Café
The aim of this place isn’t just to provide delicious food and drink, but to encourage customers to embrace a healthy and sustainable lifestyle. The Soul Bowls are packed with tasty vegetables and superfoods, the coffee is organic and the freshly blended juices and smoothies are full of antioxidants. The company has a zero virgin-plastic policy for the good of the planet and a series of fitness challenges for the good of its customers – sign up for one of its workouts and earn points towards money off your lunch!
2. Poke Me
Right by the lifts down to Bessières metro station, Poke Me is a great place for classic Hawaiian poké bowls where raw fish is the star of the show. Compile your own bowl from the ingredients on offer or pick one of the set combinations. The Hawaii, with marinaded salmon, salad, mango, avocado, edamame and onion flakes on a bed of rice, is a real crowd-pleaser. Everything is prepared fresh by friendly staff.

3. Planet Bowl
Planet Bowl has become a popular choice since first opening in Grancy, and it now has a second branch on Rue Saint Laurent. Both places fill up quickly at lunchtime as regulars queue up to make their selection, either composing their own bowl from the ingredients on offer or opting for one of the shop’s signature bowls. With colourful vegetables, mango and pomegranate seeds alongside salmon, tuna, tofu, falafel or prawns, they’re as pretty as a picture! Finish it off with your choice of sauce.

4. La Pause
Come here for a wide range of bowls, from classic salmon or prawn to chicken with feta and tzatziki or falafel with hummus, all on a bed of white rice. There are also tasty sandwiches and desserts including muffins and an irresistible homemade cheesecake. Bench seating next to the window makes it ideal for a quick eat-in lunch if you don’t want to take your bowl away, while breakfast options and good coffee will also tempt you in for a mid-morning break.

5. Green Gorilla
One of the first places in Lausanne to embrace bowl culture, Green Gorilla is now a popular fixture on the Grand Pont. Choose a ready-prepared bowl from the fridge (we love the Mango Madness, with chicken, lentils, mango and black rice) or order a Hawaiian-style poké bowl at the counter. Pair it with a healthy smoothie (the Ixcacao, with cocoa, nuts, avocado, dates, maca powder and coconut, is dessert in a drink!) and take a seat in the spacious room, attractively decorated with hanging plants.

6. Le Spot
Bringing a dash of Hawaiian sunshine to Lausanne, Le Spot offers a range of bowls inspired by the Pacific island but using local, seasonal ingredients from Swiss suppliers. The salmon, chicken and tofu are from Switzerland, as is the ‘pulled pork’ vegetarian meat substitute, which is made by Zurich-based company Planted. Fill your bowl with your choice of toppings and sauce, such as spicy satay or coriander pesto.
